Fundraising News: The La Crosse Community Foundation has awarded us a $25,000 grant to match all Women Build-designated donations! We are so grateful for this donation, and all the hard and good work our Women Build volunteers have done to raise the money and build the home. This is a testament to the women and men of the Coulee Region and their dedication to stand with us in our work to eliminate poverty housing.
The 3rd Annual Women Build home is being built at 1733 Kane Street in La Crosse in partnership with Ka Ying Xiong and Hang Yang and their five children. For pictures and to watch our progress, visit our Facebook page. For construction information, click here.
21 groups signed on to participate. We will still accept teams, although dates are filling quickly and there are not a lot of openings left; contact Kati and see if you can't find a date that works for you. Teams can be made up of employees, families, churches, civic organizations, etc. Each team of 6-15 volunteers is asked to raise $1,000 for the event (click here to download a pledge form) and all participants receive a 2011 Women Build t-shirt.
You’ll learn new skills, make new friends, and put your faith into action building a home for a family desperately in need of a safe, decent, affordable place to live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I have absolutely no construction experience. Can I still participate?
A: Absolutely. Habitat’s Construction Manager will guide and mentor you on the worksite, and we’ll provide all the training, tools, and materials you need to make this a rewarding experience.
Q: I don’t have a team, but I still want to participate. Is this possible?
A: No problem. We’re reserving several days for teams made up of women who want to work on this project but don’t have a team. Don’t worry; there are many of you. The fundraising commitment for individuals is $100.
Q: I see there is an expectation that my team raises $1000 [$100 for individuals]. How can I do this?
A: We want to make this as easy for you as possible, and there are many ways to raise the money. Every Women Build registrant will receive a pledge sheet for peer-to-peer fundraising; ask your friends, co-workers, neighbors, family, etc. to donate in your name. If you ask 10 people to each pledge $10, you're on your way! You can also check with your employer and see if it provides any matching funds, hold a bake sale, make an e-Bay sale... get creative, and you can do it. If you're really stuck, let us know and we can brainstorm with you.
Q: What if there is bad weather on the day I’m signed up to work?
A: This is Wisconsin; we can pretty much expect there will be inclement weather sometime during the construction of this home. We build regardless, so dress accordingly and come anyway.
Q: Will there really be no men on site?
A: Well… our Construction Manager is a man, and the partner family/future homeowner has men in the family; they are required to work on construction of the home. And we’re asking men to provide hospitality on site (food and drinks). So while there will be men floating around, the vast majority of this home will be built by women.
