Meet the Family

Tina and her two children, Alyria (age 15) and Brayden (age 11), consider themselves one of the lucky ones.
Tina and her kids currently live in a very old mobile home. The floors are bowed. The windows are cracked and leaking in cold air. The roof leaks and the sewer keeps backing up. Frozen pipes mean the family can go days and sometimes weeks without running water in the winter. A broken water heater spilled deadly fumes into the home through the vents. Tina reflects, “We were very lucky to have a carbon monoxide detector that saved our lives.” Tina continues, “This has been our home for almost 5 years, and I have worked very hard to make it as efficient and comfortable as possible for my kids, but the cost has gotten overwhelming with the seemingly endless repair costs and exhausting utility bills.”
Tina was desperate to find something better for her family, which is why she applied to the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Program in 2021. The whole family is excited about moving into their FIRST home. “I have always wanted to have a permanent place that my kids can come back to year after year for family gatherings as we all grow older,” Tina reflected after she was selected.
When asked why she wanted to be a homeowner, Tina provided the best response, "I applied to be a Habitat homeowner because the entire program structure is amazing! I fell in love with the idea of being part of project from start to finish and putting in the hard work along with members of the community. The idea of owning a home that is safe & not in need of constant repairs feels like a giant weight will be lifted off my shoulders, I will be able to enjoy day to day life without worrying when the next time something will break or how much it will cost. Plus having a mortgage that is affordable to my single income is a dream come true in every sense. The Habitat program has always excited me long before I thought of applying to be a homeowner. The Habitat for Humanity organization is making peoples dreams come true and laying some of these families’ biggest burdens to rest. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that!"
Tina and her family will complete 350 sweat equity hours working alongside Habitat staff and volunteers to remodel her home. When the home is complete, she will purchase the home from Habitat for the full appraised value utilizing a 0% interest loan. Tina will pay full property taxes and homeowners insurance on the home.
