Meet the Vang Family

For Ger Vang and his family, Habitat homeownership means freedom from inadequate and unsafe housing. It means stability and peace of mind for this growing family, ridding them of the stress of moving and searching for a safer place to live and grow up.
The Vang family currently rents a very old house with numerous structural problems. The ceiling has several cracks that continue to grow, letting water leak into the house when it rains. The windows are not well insulated, making the winters even colder and increasing their heating bills. The door is bent in its frame, which makes the cold air even worse. There are pests in the house that make Ger fear for his children’s health. The kitchen sink doesn’t drain properly. There is mold upstairs and water flooding the basement during rainy seasons. The Vang family’s winters are very difficult to get through because the house is simply not adequate to accommodate them all safely. With three children and another baby on the way, the state of their home is even more unacceptable.
This is what led the Vangs to apply for a Habitat for Humanity forever home. Ger said he applied for this homeownership program because he thought Habitat could help his family’s dream come true. That dream is one of safety, stability, and living without the stress of inadequate housing. When Ger was asked how he felt about helping to build his own home, he said he will like helping Habitat build his dream home.
The Vang family will complete at least 400 “sweat equity” hours alongside Habitat volunteers helping to build their own home. When the home is finished, they will purchase the house at its full appraised value with a 30-year, zero percent interest mortgage.
