Meet the Pitts Family

For Sherry Pitts, home ownership is not just about finding a place to live for herself and her four children: Jamesha (9), Fenecia and Jasiah (14), and Kal-El (15). It is about her family’s safety, their security, their ability to be themselves in a place that is theirs alone. It is a way to connect to where they live and their neighbors. In Sherry’s words, “It is a commitment to a neighborhood and community-a chance to finally plant roots.”
Sherry has repeatedly found it difficult to find living arrangements that meet her budgeting needs while also accommodating the size of her family. Their current home has caused allergy and asthma problems for Sherry and Jamesha. The four children are cramped and have been wanting more space to themselves. When asked about how she feels to be involved with Habitat for Humanity, Sherry said, “I am extremely excited to partner with Habitat- this opportunity is providing the foundation and structure not only for my home, but my family.”
Sherry’s journey to becoming a Habitat homeowner has been and will continue to be a community-wide effort. People in her community first alerted her that Habitat La Crosse was seeking applicants in Spring Grove, MN. In fact, someone brought her the flier in person. Someone else thought to bring her an application. And while she was working on filling it out, a third person called her to inform her about the opportunity.
The design of this home has also involved the community. It was designed in traditional Norwegian style by Spring Grove High School students, guided by local architect Miranda Moen. The community has been incredibly supportive of this home. This is a special project for Spring Grove, since it is Habitat for Humanity’s first home in Spring Grove and Habitat La Crosse’s 50th home.
Sherry is excited to be part of the actual construction of her new home. “The hands-on building part is going to be my favorite part. It will really make it ours,” she said. “I’m ready for it,” Pitts told the Spring Grove Herald. She and her children will complete at least 350 sweat equity hours alongside Habitat volunteers, helping to build their home and volunteering for various Habitat La Crosse programs and events.
When her forever home is completed, Sherry will purchase the house with a 30-year, zero-percent interest mortgage for its fully appraised value.

We have building opportunities for groups from businesses, churches, organizations, and even just for a group of friends.
