Meet the Darling Family

For Marlene Darling and her 16-year-old son, Michael, homeownership will give them the freedom of security and stability. This will be a “house to call a home” for the Darling Family.
Marlene currently rents a third-floor apartment with no elevator. This means her disabled mother cannot come visit the family. Though Marlene works full-time, she currently spends over 40% of her gross income on her monthly rent payment. This puts a giant strain on the family budget. Marlene is looking forward to an affordable house payment that leaves room in her budget for other important things such as food, education, health care, and savings.
Marlene and her son will provide 350 hours of sweat equity, working alongside Habitat staff and volunteers to remodel their rehab home located at 611 Adams Street in La Crosse.
When asked why she decided to apply for Habitat’s Homeownership Program, Marlene says, “Have you met [the Habitat staff]? [They] welcomed everyone who participated in the educational class at the ReStore. They made me feel like Thomas the Train. I think I can . . . I know I can.”
Marlene is excited about helping rehab her future forever home. “I feel proud learning and working alongside professional Habitat staff. The volunteers show up like angels from heaven. [They] have already taken my son under their wings,” Marlene says.
When their home is finished, the Darling Family will purchase it from Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area through a 30-year, 0% interest mortgage.
