Grievance Procedure

Purpose: Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region builds homes for people in need, using selection criteria that do not discriminate based on race, sex, color, national origin, age, handicap, religion, disability, source of income, marital status, sexual orientation, ancestry, or family status. 

Applicants that feel they were unfairly denied partnership with Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region will be allowed to register their complaint by filing a grievance.  

Scope: Staff, Board of Directors, Homeowner Applicants 

When Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region receives a grievance, it will be handled in the following manner:  

  1. The person filing a grievance must do so in writing on a form approved by Habitat for Humanity of the Greater La Crosse Region. The completed grievance shall be mailed as stated on the grievance form. 
  2. Upon receipt, a copy of the grievance and all supporting documents will be forwarded to the individual who is the focus of the grievance. The person shall have ten days to submit a response to the grievance to the Executive Committee. 
  3. The Executive Committee shall make a preliminary evaluation and prepare preliminary findings. After the preliminary evaluation, the Executive Committee may attempt to reconcile the matter between the parties. 
  4. The Executive Committee will notify the person filing the grievance of its preliminary findings, and also report on the grievance at the next scheduled Board of Directors meeting. If the Board of Directors agrees with the preliminary decision of the Executive Committee, the preliminary decision will stand. If the Board of Directors disagrees with the preliminary decision of the Executive Committee, the person filing the grievance will be notified in writing within five days of the Board meeting. The Board’s review decision shall be final. 
  5. This grievance procedure in no way prohibits the grievant from submitting a complaint to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can be reached at 1-800-669-9777 or at their website www.hud.gov.
