ReNEW the Block

Habitat's new initiative, ReNew the Block, is designed to tightly focus home repairs and stormwater mitigation in a single city block for maximized economic, visual, and revitalization impacts. This project is unique and the first of its kind and would put the City of La Crosse in the National spotlight of sustainable communities.

Habitat's first ReNew the Block location is the block at South 9th Street in La Crosse between Ferry and Division Streets, incorporating three La Crosse Promise Homes and Lincoln Middle School. The goal is to turn this barren portion of the Washburn Neighborhood into a sustainable oasis our entire community can enjoy.
Plans integrate layers of community revitalization, including: exterior home repairs, re-grading and landscaping owner-occupied properties, 6000 square feet of permeable pavers, biofilter rain gardens and infiltration gardens on grade in city boulevards, 8850 square foot edible schoolyard and community food forest with free pantry and shared tool shed, 450 square foot outdoor classroom, interpretive and educational signage, strategic communication plans; website, social platforms, print media, local media, and email campaigns, and hands-on project participation and community workshops.

The first phase of construction was completed in August 0f 2022. Community members of all ages, came together to help install the water-friendly landscape at the North and South ends of Lincoln Middle School.
The ReNew the Block project is bold. It is meant to be bold. It needs to be bold. It will highlight all that is possible when people, neighbors, organizations, and communities come together. Habitat for Humanity La Crosse Area is ready to showcase this pilot project, as the first of its kind, and set the stage for future efforts in the City of La Crosse as well as across the nation.

We need your help. ReNew the Block is still looking for funding to complete the final phase of construction. Donate below or contact Amy Smith at amy@habitatlacrosse.org
