Dear La Crosse City Council Members,
I am writing to express my support for the proposed updates to La Crosse’s zoning code.
La Crosse needs a zoning code that reflects the city we are today and the community we want to build in the future. Our current rules can make it difficult to build the kinds of homes and neighborhoods that people need and want, especially modest, affordable homes. Updating the code will make it easier to create a wider range of housing options while still maintaining standards for things like building design and height.
La Crosse needs more housing. The City’s 2024 Housing Study found that we need to add 200–230 housing units each year through 2030 to meet current demand. Whether folks are renting, buying their first home, raising a family, downsizing, or moving to La Crosse, more housing options can help people at different stages of life find a place to live in the neighborhoods they want to call home.
I appreciate that this zoning update has been developed through a substantial public planning process. Zoning affects everyone in our community, and I believe it is important that we regularly review these rules to make sure they serve La Crosse well.
I encourage the City Council to support the proposed zoning code updates.
