current project: La Crosse City Council Candidate Survey
In April 2023, some districts in La Crosse will elect new City Council members. Habitat for Humanity surveyed all candidates on the ballot, including those who were incumbent or running unopposed. We received two responses out of eight candidates contacted.

our goals
Throughout 2020, the Housing Advocacy Committee connected with local organizations and groups that represent protected classes and traditionally marginalized populations. Participants were asked to respond to open-ended questions on housing in the La Crosse area, asking them to provide input on ways to better understand the challenges, learn what resources are missing, and celebrate the services that are working. The committee felt it was important to hear from people with lived experiences and who have faced challenges with safe and affordable housing. We understand that we cannot begin to make productive changes unless we can get at the heart of what is and isn’t working in a community.
After the surveys were gathered, Habitat partnered with UW-La Crosse professor, Dr. Chen, Associate Professor of Math, and one of his Data Sciences students, Douglas Krouth, to conduct a quantitative analysis of the survey answers. After the data was compiled, Ava Beaudot, a student majoring in in Social Justice at UW-L, in partnership with Professor of Sociology, Dr. Carol Miller, reviewed the information and created a list of recommendations to help address the challenges addressed in the survey responses. Habitat for Humanity and members of the Housing Advocacy Committee then partnered with UW-Extension for an extended goal setting meeting to review the reports and statistics and share concerns. The information gathered at this meeting led to the development of short-term and long-term goals aimed at protecting, promoting and expanding safe and affordable housing in the La Crosse Area.
This has moved the committee into the boots-on-the-ground stage of action that will bring attention to the challenges of safe, affordable housing: from homelessness to tenant rights to access to homeownership; from education and outreach to advocating for legislation and policy changes at the state and local level; as well as spotlighting racial housing disparities that exist in our community.
