Get involved! A conversation about civic engagement with Mac Kiel

This is a summary of a conversation between Mac Kiel and Sam Stauffer who served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Habitat in 2025.

Local government decisions shape the communities we live in every dayyet many people overlook the power they have to influence these decisions. Civic engagement at the local level isn’t just about votingit’s about building relationships, understanding policy, and participating in conversations that impact our neighborhoods. Recently, I sat down with Mac Kiel, a former La Crosse City Council member, to explore why local involvement matters and how residents can make their voices heard.

What made you want to get involved in La Crosse politics?

Mac explained that she didn’t always see herself as someone who could take a leading role in local politics, but was exposed to the policy process through a friend asking her to participate. Through this participation Mac became more comfortable communicating with local elected officials, city staff, and the general public on policy issues.

How do you ensure you’re getting good information when it comes to public policy?

Mac emphasized the importance of confirming information through multiple sources. She begins by reading agenda items herself to get a general understanding of the issue and reaching out to relevant city staff to address any questions about the legislation. This ensures that when she is communicating with the general public on a given issue, she is able to give reliable information and answer any questions with accuracy.

Do you have any advice for those hoping to get more involved in local politics?

Mac told me that the best way to get involved in politics at the local level is to start building relationships with local elected officials. This goes beyond reaching out when you oppose decisions being made, starting with understanding your councilmember’s values and their approach to public policy. She emphasized that building these relationships improve conversations around particular policies.

Civic engagement doesn’t require holding office. It starts with curiosity, conversation, and connection. By learning how policies are made, verifying information, and building relationships with local leaders, anyone can play a role in shaping their community’s future. As Mac reminded me, local government works best when residents are informed and involved. So, take that first step: attend a meeting, reach out to your councilmember, and be part of the dialogue that makes La Crosse stronger.
